Welcome to your course

Welcome to the University of Cumbria and more specifically, can I wish you a warm welcome from the whole Healthcare Science Team who are really looking forward to meeting you in just a few weeks’ time. You are about to become a ‘fresher’ and life might just change a little for you over the coming weeks and months however, you can be assured of one thing: the teams here, both in the clinical and academic centres are highly professional, very experienced in dealing with most situations which might arise and very supportive too.

The Welcome Week timetable for student healthcare scientists is a mixture of Faculty/University information-giving sessions, subject specific radiography sessions to familiarise you with the course structure along with the clinical skills facilities and some free time for yourself so that you can take part in any optional sessions or just hang out and perhaps get to know each other better. We are very much of the belief that you are here to have fun as well as to work hard.

Pre-course Preparation

We don’t want course preparations to be too much of a burden, especially if the weather over the next few weeks turns out to be as good as it is at the time of writing this! However, the course will be pretty full-on when you get here and any work you can do before you arrive will definitely take a load off during what will be a very hectic first couple of terms.

I have provided the details of a few essential texts below, all of which are on the essential reading list and each one will provide you with some of the basics that you will be concentrating on prior to your first placement in January. Any reading (and understanding) that you can achieve will pay dividends.

If there are subjects among the ‘4 essential areas’ listed above that you feel might give you more of a problem then it goes without saying really that you would be well advise to give a little more of your time to those subjects.

Pre-course Reading

Equipment

You do not need to purchase any equipment other than that which students would naturally expect to have with them such as pens/pencils; paper etc. A scientific calculator may be useful also. Other than that, we will provide you with the use of all necessary items of equipment and you will be measured up for your uniforms during your first week here. You will be expected to have comfortable footwear for clinical placement.

Uniform Measurement and Handout Sessions

Please note, due to the number of students requiring uniforms, measurement sessions are carried out in same sex communal changing areas.
