Welcome to the University of Cumbria and congratulations on gaining a place on the FdSc Project Management.

Where will I study?

All of your classes are scheduled to take place at the University’s Fusehill Street campus in Carlisle.  Fusehill Street is a 10-15 minute walk from Carlisle rail station and has several pay & display car parks within close proximity.  1-2 hour disc parking zones are in operation in the streets around the campus for shorter visits.

What is my timetable?

Your studies on the FdSc course in Project Management or BSc (Hons) Project Management will start at 10am on Tuesday 18th September with an intensive two-week study block. This is designed to get you established as a University of Cumbria student, build a strong student group and establish a solid student-tutor relationship as well as encompass delivery of the first module of the programme.  The remaining 8 days of the study block will be 9:30am until 4:30pm.  On the 18th September you will need to report to room B111 for 9:30am.  This room is on the first floor of the Blencathra building (the building for the main campus reception).

During this 2-week study block we will cover some essential digital skills to help you become familiar with the tools that you will be expected to use as a student (e.g. word processing, university e-learning tools, online library resources, email and other communication tools). We will also cover most of the content for the first unit on the Foundation degree course and there will be an assessment related to this unit.  The Foundation Degree course is designed to be studied full-time alongside a suitable work-based role or placement and consequently the majority of the course is delivered through a day-release mode of study.

Following the initial two-week study block, your day release learning will commence from Wednesday 3rd October. The Outline Year 1 timetable included with this email provides further information about how the course is delivered throughout the year. Your normal times on the day-release days will be 9:30 to 4:30.

Who are the tutors?

The three main University staff that you will deal with are:  Dr Therese Lawlor-Wright, Charles Dobson and Richard Marsh, should you have any queries or concerns then please contact us. Usually, it is best to send an initial email outlining the nature of your query and we will get back to discuss at a mutually convenient time.

Course Communications

Prior to starting your course, you will receive a series of emails from the University that will guide you through registering as a student, uploading a photo for your student card and activating your student account.  These communications will be sent to the email address that you provided when you applied so please check this regularly and get in touch if no messages have appeared by mid-September.

Once you have been registered as a student on the programme, you will receive a new ‘University’ email address. Once created, your University email address will then be used for the majority of communications so you should get into the habit of checking this regularly or finding out how to forward email messages from your University account to your usual email address.

Study Expectations

Typically, you will attend the University for 1 day per week.  During this time, you will usually have 2 x 3 hour classes, each of which will include some lecture content, practical exercises, group tasks, discussions or activities.

In addition to this scheduled time, you will be expected to undertake directed and self-study.  Directed study will be to engage with additional reading, practical exercises or online activities that your tutors specifically identify.  Self-study is that which you identify and undertake under your own direction, motivation and interest.

On a programme such as this, your experiences in the workplace can also be used to consolidate your learning, however to make best use of this opportunity it is advisable to set some time aside each week to actively look for these linkages and reflect on how the subjects you are being taught compare to your experiences in the workplace.

We would expect these additional study activities to occupy a minimum of 5-10 hours per week, which would of course include working on assignments as and when necessary.

Locations and Directions
