Welcome to your course

Welcome to the BA (Hons) Sport Coaching and Physical Education course at the University of Cumbria. I am delighted that you have chosen to study BA (Hons) Sport Coaching and Physical Education in the Department of Medical and Sport Sciences. My name is Timothy Barry (Head of Department) and I wanted to take this opportunity to tell you a little more about our department and the opportunities available to you when you join our university.

We deliver courses in Sport Coaching & Development, Sport Coaching and Physical Education, Sport and Exercise Science and Sport Rehabilitation all based at our Lancaster campus. We pride ourselves on the quality of the teaching and learning we provide for our students. We are a small, friendly and caring University which means that you will get to know everyone very quickly and gain the support you need to succeed. You, as an individual, will be our primary focus as we seek to enhance your education and employability prospects. You will get excellent access to tutors, facilities and learning support and we are continuing to invest in all of our services to enhance our students’ learning.

Research is key to the success of our department and we encourage all our students to get involved in the research process. Our students regularly present their final year dissertation projects at the prestigious British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences national conference. Three former graduates have undertaken PhDs in the Department with one working with a partner university in Rome for six months.

All our students have the opportunity to play an active role in University sport organised and run by the Student Union. We encourage our students to develop their curriculum vitae by volunteering within and outside the university on community projects.
