Welcome to your course

I am delighted that you have chosen to study BSc Sport & Exercise Science in the Department of Medical and Sport Sciences. My name is Timothy Barry (Head of Department) and I wanted to take this opportunity to tell you a little more about our department and the opportunities available to you when you join our university.

We deliver courses in Sport & Exercise Science, Sport Coaching & Physical Education and Sports Rehabilitation on our Lancaster Campus. We pride ourselves on the quality of the teaching and learning we provide for our students.

We are a small, friendly and caring University which means that you will get to know everyone very quickly and gain the support you need to succeed. You as an individual will be our primary focus as we seek to enhance your education and employability prospects. You will get excellent access to tutors, facilities and learning support, for example the modules in Exercise Physiology and Biomechanics allow you to access to our Human Performance laboratory regulalry enabling you to develop key skills and learn to use all the equipment. We have just made a significant investment in facilities with the creation of a new Biomechanics laboratory to enhance our students learning.

Research is key to the success of our department and we encourage all our students to get involved in the research process. Our students regularly present their final year dissertation projects at the prestigious British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences national conference. Three former graduates have undertaken PhD’s in the Department with one working with a partner university in Rome for six months.

Getting the best possible job will be a priority for you when investing in a degree. We have an excellent record with 95% of our graduates in employment or further study within the first six months after finishing their degree. A study by the Institute for Fiscal Studies this year found that University of Cumbria Sport graduates have the 2nd (males) and 3rd (females) highest earnings compared to other Universities nationally. The spectrum of employment opportunities varies from working in Public Health through to elite sport.

All our students have the opportunity to play an active role in University sport organised and run by the Student Union. We encourage our students to develop their curriculum vitae by volunteering within and outside the university on community projects.
