Lecturers and staff will be on hand from 6:30am on results day on Thursday 15th to guide you through any questions and information you may need support with. Elizabeth Bates, Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Cumbria, and Julie Taylor, Principal Lecturer in lifelong and Interprofessional Learning have provided their guidance on how to approach the prospect of Psychology during clearing.
DON'T PANIC
It can be a really challenging time no matter how you have come to the conclusion that you should consider Clearing, but first thing, don’t panic. There are lots of options available, and plenty of time to think about them. Many institutions like the University of Cumbria have still got spaces available on a variety of courses including Psychology, where we proudly ranked 1st in the North West for Psychology in the Guardian League tables 2019.
SHOP AROUND
It can be overwhelming and you may at this time follow impulse and be tempted to take the first place offered in Clearing. Spend time shopping around, as you would for any big decision, you need to find the perfect fit for you. Try to attend Open days or arrange a visit so you can get a feel for the place and the environment in which you’ll be working and living – as sometimes when you find the right place, you just know, and a campus or city can make a huge difference.
Attend one of our Open day events available across all 5 of our campuses Saturday 17th August. You can come and chat with a member of the Psychology team, and have a tour of the campus, ask about accommodation, find out about finances and ask any more questions you might have.

What is the difference between Psychology and Applied Psychology?
“Both courses at the University of Cumbria are BPS accredited by the British Psychological Society, so the core curriculum for both courses is the same. The difference comes in the additional and optional modules that you would undertake. Our Psychology programme takes a traditional approach to studying the subject and focuses on theoretical, experimental, and advanced research approaches. Our Applied Psychology programme has options that allow you to explore how we use psychology in the real world, for example in forensic, clinical, and health psychology settings.

What jobs are there within the field?
As a degree, it leaves you with a range of skills and attributes that lend themselves to careers in health education and promotion, counselling, social work, teaching, organisational behaviour, human resources, and prison or probation work..

What postgraduate options do you have?
"We have a full suite of MSc Psychology programmes that you would be eligible for after completing your degree. Through further postgraduate training it is possible to pursue professional psychology careers in clinical, forensic, sport, educational, health or a variety of other specialist areas – see the BPS careers page for more information.

What support do you offer?
"We will support you in whatever way we can both within the psychology team and you are assigned a personal tutor on Day 1 of induction week. Classes are generally of a size that allows you to get to know us and us to get to know you, you are not just a number to us at the University of Cumbria"
