Get involved in Lancaster's culture
Our beautiful, historic city sits on the River Lune, just a few miles from the West Coast of England. Whether you’re into history, arts, socialising or keeping fit – we have it all here in Lancaster.
Choosing a university is a big decision – and will lead to experiences you’ll remember for your whole life. You’ll no doubt have considered which one best suits your education and career goals, so now it’s time to focus on the location itself. Lancaster is one of the north’s most vibrant university cities – and is bursting with things to do.
Lancaster hosts a range of events throughout the year, which our students love to get involved in. In May, head to Williamson Park for the Highest Point Festival. This is the city’s biggest music festival, which is hoping to host Rudimental, Rag N Bone Man, and Becky Hill this year. Best yet – it’s just a five-minute walk from our campus!
For something a little more low-key, there’s the Big Family Day Out, which also takes place in May. It’s not just families that can have fun here – there is plenty to see and do for our students, including arts and craft stalls, games, competitions, and animals.
Be sure to check out the Lancaster Grand Theatre too. This beautiful facility has an amazing schedule of events planned throughout the year, including stand-up comedy shows, plays, and musical performances.
Drinkers and revelers will love Lancaster’s very own Gin, Rum, and Reggae Festival too, which is held at the Lancaster Cricket and Sports Ground in July. Here you can sample many variations of this Caribbean favourite, as well as dance to some classic reggae, dancehall, and ska tunes.
Lancaster Central Library is more than a place to come and read books. It’s also home to some great cultural events throughout the year, including plays, readings, live music performances, and arts and crafts classes. The Library is a great place to find a new hobby – you’ll be surprised what you can find by keeping up to date with its schedule.
Another big event on the calendar is the Celebrate Lancaster festival, which is held on the last Friday every June. This is an occasion that celebrates the city’s unique cultural diversity and traditions and includes fireworks displays, food trucks, and musical performances.
Finally, Lancaster celebrates bonfire night in style with the Light up Lancaster festival. Allowing locals and visitors to discover new things about our historic city. At night the festival gives artists a platform to showcase illumination works across town, including light-up displays in Market Square, planetary exhibits at the Central Library, and brightly decorated food stalls in Dalton Square. The finale of the festival is a firework spectacular, an unmissable display that illuminates the entire city.
All year long, the city hosts a range of traditional festivals and cultural shows. Upon moving to Lancaster, it’ll quickly become clear how this thriving city is a hotspot for creativity and culture.
