Media Arts and Performing Arts at the University of Cumbria
From wildlife media, game design and film & TV to acting, dance, musical theatre and performing arts - here is why you should study arts at the University of Cumbria.
The University of Cumbria’s Brampton Road campus in Carlisle is the creative home of our Institute of the Arts. This is a special place for the study, practice and enjoyment of arts and culture, and it has been so since the Carlisle College of Art first opened on this site in 1950.
The Institute of the Arts offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in an array of artistic disciplines, from Performing Arts and Creative Writing to Art & Design and Film & TV, including Dance, Musical Theatre, Game Design and Wildlife Media, along with excellent facilities and resources to support these activities.
Learning for a Career
Our courses are heavily practical and our focus is to put our students in touch with agencies, commissioners, publications and industry leaders, so that they leave their degree with solid industry connections and a great understanding of working in the arts as a career.
Our former students have gone on to achieve great things and our Alumni includes Turner Prize winners, Oscar winners, Pixar animators, Disney designers and Bollywood producers as well as an array of professional artists and owners of businesses that support the art industry or use the Arts to change and improve lives.
Our Institute of the Arts benefits from a range of strategic art partnerships and not only takes part in several national and local art events throughout the year, but also organizes and hosts auditioning exhibitions and performances with industry influencers, so they are fully aware of the talent graduating from the University of Cumbria.
Studying here also means being enriched by all that arts and culture has to offer, as you rub shoulders with over 1,000 likeminded artists and creatives studying an array of artistic disciplines. It’s a great opportunity for building lasting friendships and working on collaborative projects.
Home to two theatres, with the main theatre seating around 200 people, and three further dance studios, our Institute of the Arts offers BA Hons degrees and foundation degrees in Acting, Dance, Musical Theatre and Performing Arts.
Our Stanwix Theatre is at the heart of our student performances as well as visiting professional productions throughout the year. Visiting Theatre companies this year have included Hull Truck, Compass, Trestle, Théâtre Sans Frontières and Quondam. Comedy highlights included Eddie Izzard, Ardale O'Hanlon, Al Murray, John Hegley and Neil Innes. The Limbik Theatre Company brought their award-winning show The Harbour and The Messenger, and Immersion Theatre (co-founded and directed by James Tobias, a graduate from our Performing Arts course) are also regular visitors.
Our students benefit from theatre research trips; visiting directors and choreographers from leading national performances working with students every semester; enviable studio facilities for rehearsing, practicing and project activities as well as lectures; and most importantly, our end of course ‘Show Stopper’, when we host two auditioning events in London and Manchester and invite talent management agencies as well as theatre and dance companies to preview the talent graduating from our Institute of the Arts.
