    University kicks off preseason training for League One club

    Preseason training for Sky Bet League One contenders Morecambe FC has kicked off at the University of Cumbria in Lancaster. The Shrimps’ first-team squad members have spent their first day back for preseason training at the Bowerham Road campus. Led by lecturer Xavier Smith and colleagues within the university’s Institute of Health, undergraduate students on the BSc (Hons) Sport Rehabilitation degree programme have put the professional footballers through a series of human performance tests.

    A lesser-known stretch of England’s rugged North West coast is the inspiration for a new public art commissions programme announced today and launching in spring 2023. The project, supported by the University of Cumbria's Centre for National Parks and Protected Areas, is called Deep Time: Commissions for the Lake District Coast and draws on the varied landscape and rich heritage of West Cumbria, its people and place.

    Next steps for Carlisle Citadels campus project

    Ahead of a formal planning application this Spring, the team working on proposals to create a new campus in the centre of Carlisle for the University of Cumbria is considering feedback collected recently from the public. Following the appointment of a contractor and the completion of a successful planning application process, it is expected that main construction work on the Carlisle Citadels campus will begin in the first half of 2023, with completion currently forecasted for Spring 2026.

    As part of its Town Deal programme, the Government has confirmed that the full amount of £25 million has been awarded to Barrow-in-Furness. The funding enables the town to take forward seven schemes that are set to secure a bright and transformative future in Barrow for generations to come. The largest and most ambitious scheme is the Barrow Learning Quarter which will see the creation of a transformational new University of Cumbria campus and transformation of Furness College’s sixth form.

    A new study, involving 10 million graduates on professional networking site LinkedIn, has rated University of Cumbria as being in the Top 10 for developing business leaders and 14th overall in the Top 50 universities for business.     Aspiring wildlife photographers and filmmakers have pooled their talents to create a 2021 calendar.  University of Cumbria’s Wildlife Society has selected 13 stunning images of nature for its calendar. Showing a diversity of animal, bird, insect and plant life, the collection features coastal birds such as the Sandpiper, forest and woodland’s Tawny Owls, the nocturnal badger and, shining a light on the importance of invertebrates, the role of bees and moths in pollination.

    Distinguished farmer and landowner becomes university honorary fellow

    A farmer who has used conservation to help transform the fortunes of his family’s historic estate has received an honorary fellowship from the University of Cumbria. Giles Mounsey-Heysham, a Deputy Lieutenant of Cumbria, is the ninth generation to manage his ancestral family property, Castletown, near Rockcliffe, Carlisle. He is also a chartered surveyor, with his extensive career including time with Cluttons and Savills.

    A 1,000-mile cycle ride from the English Lake District to Italy’s Lake Garda is helping to provide African schoolchildren with one of the basics for learning – desks.     A North Yorkshire couple who found love whilst training to be teachers in the Lake District almost 30 years ago have returned to Cumbria to watch their daughter graduate. Katie Pritchard-Jenkins, 21, has completed her BSc Outdoor Adventure and Environment degree at the University of Cumbria’s Ambleside campus and is planning to follow her parents’ example and become a teacher. Her proud parents Adam and Gill trained at the same site 30 years ago when it was known as Charlotte Mason College.

    Five years ago Stacey Wilson fulfilled a childhood ambition to become a nurse when she qualified upon graduating from the University of Cumbria. Six months ago Stacey secured promotion and she is now one of two sepsis nurse specialists who oversee the care and treatment of more than 3,000 patients per month at north Cumbria’s two main hospitals.     Carlisle based artist, Jan Marshall 55, is making an unusual request of staff, students and local residents living near the University of Cumbria, Fusehill Street, Carlisle. She wants their keepsakes and mementoes to set into resin ‘bricks’, which together she will use to form a series of colourful and original sculptures to transform the university campus.

    International recognition for Lancaster radiography researchers

    Radiography researchers from the Lancaster campus of the University of Cumbria are celebrating after winning one of the inaugural prizes awarded by an internationally recognised discussion group. In March Lancaster-based academics Dr Charles Sloan and Dr Paul Miller invited discussions around a paper entitled Are Recent Radiography Grads ‘fit for purpose?’ The online community voted by a significant margin this week that this was the ‘favourite chat’ in recognition of the debate it prompted.

    Outstanding response to university 1000-mile bus tour

    Students from the University of Cumbria will be over 450 miles into a 1000-mile tour of Northern England and Ireland by the end of this week, helping people to find their place at university. So far, students have taken over 450 enquiries from people looking to start university this year or next. Students have spoken to people from such far off places as Colombia and one individual is known to have travelled 105 miles from his home in Dublin to visit the bus in Belfast just to get some advice.

    An internationally recognised discussion group which considers medical radiation sciences research has chosen to highlight work carried out at the University of Cumbria for the second time this year. This month research work, which examined how children are cared for while undergoing MRI procedures, will be the lead discussion topic.
