Silica Ionita graduated in 2018 following her studies of Occupational Therapy with us at the University of Cumbria. Silica was originally from Romania and was highly attracted the University of Cumbria to further her education. She was inspired by three close friends from Romania who had travelled to Carlisle to study with us. They’d reported back that it was a fantastic place to take that next career step. Of course, we agree.

Silica was originally from Romania and was highly attracted the University of Cumbria to further her education. She was inspired by three close friends from Romania who had travelled to Carlisle to study with us. They’d reported back that it was a fantastic place to take that next career step. Of course, we agree.

We asked Silica what the best thing was about studying with us, her response was, Very high standards of teaching, with excellent supportive tutors and fantastic career prospects.” She went on to tell us that the campus has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere with lots of support.

Silica strongly believes that the education she’s achieved at University of Cumbria has already opened up a multitude of pathways to follow. She credits the teaching team as friendly, approachable and states that the most important aspect is that they are there for you. She says, “Their fast reply has always saved me from worry, offering advice and guiding me during my academic journey.”

The strong bond formed with her tutors motivated her to strive for better outcomes and continuously challenge herself. She speaks very highly of Janice Bell, senior lecturer, because she was so understanding and always found a way to encourage Silica to overcome obstacles.

Clear that Silica is fond of the teaching staff here at University of Cumbria we asked her if she had a role model here who’d make a difference to her studies, she replied:

Mike Doak - Senior Lecturer in Occupational Therapy has always found a way of answering my questions, by making me formulate an answer to my own question."

Silica told us that she respects how the tutors here at University of Cumbria have a way of helping you find a solution on your own.

I was made to feel that I can achieve, I can move mountains (if needed!). The tutors discovered the part of me that I was not aware was there and gradually, with gentle guidance, prompted me to achieve.

Silica agrees that through high-quality training and placement experiences, you’ll achieve your goals whether you’d prefer to work in acute settings, community or in the private sector, with children or adults, in schools or prisons by making use of the Occupational Therapy core skills.
