Outdoor Adventure and Environmental Studies
Jack Howard, originally from Driffield in East Yorkshire, decided that his ambitions lay further west.
"I had moved across to the Lakes from Yorkshire after completing my A levels and working in the Leisure centre as a lifeguard, fitness instructor and swimming teacher and coach. I decided to study at Kendal College for 2 years, after which I took on some freelance instructor work. I then moved to Ambleside to begin my degree while also working in the local bike shop.
"Discussion with lecturers from all of the Outdoor courses here lead me to the decision to take this course. There are great opportunities to gain NGB awards alongside studying this course, whilst being able to learn about the culture and environment in which we work and live."
I love that we cover such a wide variety of subjects and matters, it encompasses everything outdoors and everything is very current and on the forefront of research! There are so many amazing opportunities and experiences that I have had because of being here.
Jack has had plenty of outdoor experience on his course. "So far I have visited a local re-wilding project in the Ennerdale valley and undertaken a 3 day self lead and self powered expedition home from there in the first year. I've visited the Isle of Rùm to research the geographical processes that have shaped the island, learning how to use these features for future group work. I have also cycled to the Picos De Europa as part of the course and completed a research project whilst there over the course of a month to then cycle home again, carrying all of my essentials on the bike!"
The course has really changed Jack's life. "I have had access and exposure to lots of new materials, gained new knowledge about the world. I have a completely different outlook on life and the world since starting my degree."
