Fiona graduated with a degree in Ancient History and Classical Civilisation from the University of Sheffield and since then has worked in higher education as an administrator and manager in a variety of roles. She began her career at Sheffield University, then moved to join the University of Glasgow, at which stage she began to develop her interest in good governance. From there she moved to Lancaster University, where she was appointed as the University Secretary in 1999.  She took early retirement after serving as a member of the senior management team of that University for almost 17 years. Her focus most recently was on governance, the management of academic standards and quality, and corporate risk management.

Fiona says “I admire the mission of the University of Cumbria to make available excellent higher education that will transform lives, support regional economic growth and further the development of communities in Cumbria, and I am honoured to have been appointed to the Board.  I hope that I can use my skills and experience to help the University in achieving its aims, in these challenging times for higher education generally.”
