Biography

Brian is a Professor of Nursing and a recognised and established national leader in relation to nursing, health care and workforce issues.

He provides executive oversight for the Institute of Health, Institute of Science and Environment and the Institute of Education, Arts and Society.  In addition, Brian provides executive oversight for Student Services, Corporate Communications and Research and Knowledge Exchange across the University’s campuses.  Brian also leads on our equality, diversity, inclusion, and well-being agendas and has a strong interest in cultural change within organisations.

Until recently Brian was the Chair of the Council of Deans of Health UK, which represents the university sector across the whole of the UK with 105 universities that provide nursing, midwifery and/or allied health profession education and/or research and works at the highest level of strategic discussions on issues such as workforce, curriculum design, research, and policy.  Brian was an adjunct Professor at John Hopkins University in Baltimore USA from 2016 – 2022.

Brian has been leading on the strategic partnership with Imperial College London to create the Pears Cumbria School of Medicine, a brand new medical school in the north west of England, providing a 4 year Graduate entry programme which will open at our Carlisle campus in 2025.

Brian is a Governor at University Hospitals Trust Morecambe Bay and a Trustee of the Fells Academy Trust in Cumbria.
