Module - Acute and Critical Care: Foundations for Practice (level 6)

The aim of this module is to develop in-depth knowledge of the principles underpinning the care of adults experiencing acute and critical illness.

You will need to complete an induction prior to commencement of your first module. We have a comprehensive online induction package to welcome you to both the university and your programme of study.

The running of this module is dependent on there being sufficient numbers of interest.

This module is co-taught with level 7.

Course Overview

This module covers the foundations of acute/critical illness, patient assessment, monitoring and the effect of acute/critical illness on body key systems.

Having completed this module you may wish to bring these 20 credits into the University Advanced Diploma in Practice Development: Acute and Critical Care.

Please discuss this opportunity with the module leader before completion of this module. Alternatively, you may wish to use this module towards one of our top-up degrees such as BSc (Hons) Nursing Practice.

  • Analyse the patient journey specifically the process of assessment and problem identification that will inform the evaluation of patient care
  • Appraise the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions utilised in the assessment and management of the acutely/critically ill adult
  • Critically appraise the key concepts, theories, evidence base, guidelines and policy upon which your clinical and professional practice is based
  • Using personal reflection, with a client/service user focus, critically analyse how learning from this module has transformed your understanding of your practice
