The aim of this module is to explore the ethics and value-bases for decision-making in healthcare and the implications of values for and leadership and leadership styles.
You will need to complete an induction prior to commencement of your first module. We have a comprehensive online induction package to welcome you to both the University and your programme of study. Alternatively classroom-based induction days take place at our Lancaster and Carlisle campuses and are usually scheduled for the first week of each semester.
The running of this module is dependent on there being sufficient numbers of interest.

This postgraduate level module is part of the Practice Development Framework and can be studied as part of the MSc Practice Development: Occupational Health or MSc Practice Development programme.

Course summary
The indicative module content includes: ethics and values - philosophical perspectives and dilemmas; the practical application of ethics to leadership practice and decision-making; values-based leadership; decision-making models - qualitative and quantitative; algorithms; cognitive continuum; Bayes theorem; decision-trees; collaborative approaches to decision-making; reflective practice; emotional intellingence; enhancing personal resilience; compliance and obedience; power; Foucauldian discourse analysis.
On successful completion of this module you will be able to:
- Critically reflect on and systematically evaluate your own ethics and values base and the implications of these for your effectiveness as a leader.
- Demonstrate a coherent, comprehensive and critical understanding of the underpinning literature and evidence-base for ethical decision-making in your leadership practice.
- Provide a comprehensive evaluation of the range and critical application of decision-making strategies available to support ethical leadership practice in healthcare.
- Critically evaluate how ethical decision-making can contribute to personal resilience and organisational sustainability.

Timetables
The teaching timetable should be available from the end of August. Access to the timetable is through the Student Hub – you will be able to access the Student Hub after you have completed online registration. The teaching day is 9am to 6pm, Monday to Friday; please keep your other commitments open until confirmation of your teaching timetable, and bear in mind that many courses will offer placements or fieldwork which sometimes extends into the evenings and weekends.

Evidence of prior successful study at underpinning level.
Selection criteria
To be eligible to study this module, students must demonstrate the ability to study at this level and commit to attempting the assessment.
When taken as part of a specific named award, the module content and assessment must be focussed towards the subject of that award.
Completion of the formative components will support students in undertaking the summative assessment. With regard to 'method of assessment' - 'project work' could typically involve: reflective essay; portfolio; report; patchwork text.
This module is available as a standalone module where applicants can demonstrate evidence of sufficient underpinning study. Successful completion of the module will confer eligibility for a certificate of achievement.
