Available to all undergraduate and PGCE applicants who have been offered a place in September on one of the university’s courses, Head Start is a short online programme designed to prepare you for HE study at undergraduate or postgraduate level by exploring the following:

  • Learning at undergraduate or postgraduate level (depending on programme of entry)
  • Finding and evaluating academic sources
  • Academic writing
  • Referencing at the University of Cumbria
  • It also helps students become familiar with the university’s virtual learning environment (VLE), Blackboard.

Graduate destinations

Completing Head Start will give you an advantage by enhancing your confidence and level of preparedness prior to the start of your main programme of study here at Cumbria. Students who complete all elements of the programme will receive a University's Certificate of Achievement that is recognised within Career Ahead, the University's Employability Award.

Student special educational needs teachers help others Covid19 pandemic

When student teachers in Lancashire were forced to cancel a key conference about inclusion that they had spent months planning they made sure their efforts to help others were not thwarted by the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Instead, items and funds raised by University of Cumbria students on a four-year BA Hons Primary Education with QTS in Inclusion/SEND (special educational needs) course have been given to a local foodbank and disability swimming club.
