Course summary
The indicative module content includes: consent, infection control, sharps safety, needlestick injury, anatomy and physiology of veins, clotting, tourniquet technique, site selection and care, competence, referral forms, blood collection methods, sample containers, labelling and transport, potential complications, patients perspective.
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of the legal and professional issues associated with obtaining venus blood samples
- Demonstrate standard precautions for the prevention of infection and other health and safety measures
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of anatomy and physiology associated with venous sampling
- Competently obtain a venous blood sample using a safe tourniquet technique
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of blood sampling containers, referral forms, labelling and transport to the laboratory

To be eligible to study the module, you must demonstrate the ability to study at level 4 and commit to attempting the assessment. You must participate in the formative components in order to pass the module.
