Course Overview

We understand that real-world experience is crucial to developing your skills and knowledge as a trainee nurse. That's why 50% of your time on our MSc Adult Nursing course will be spent on placement in a variety of clinical environments, including accident and emergency, medical/surgical, older adults, palliative care, and hospice nursing.

As well as this, you'll build your confidence and gain a competitive edge by developing practical skills in simulated 'real life' settings, using our dedicated facilities. These include mock wards, simulated home spaces, and our brand-new immersive simulation room.

What's more, if you study our MSc in Nursing you might be eligible to receive an NHS grant of at least £5,000 per year of study, which does not need to be repaid. See the Fees and Funding tab below for more information.

You will graduate with a highly sought-after postgraduate degree in nursing, eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), and qualified to enter an NHS role with a Band 5 salary (£28,407-£34,580 per year for 2024-2025).

Modules

This course is also available as MSc Pre-registration Nursing/Registered Nurse: Mental Health Nursing

Year one
  • Concepts, Theories and Practice in Professional Nursing
Explore the essentials of nursing practice in this module. We’ll introduce you to the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC – Nursing's Professional Body) and the legal, ethical, and professional concepts that inform nursing practice. You’ll engage in discussions and seminars, and the module will culminate in you presenting a real-life legal, ethical, or professional practice issue.
  • Pathophysiology and Nursing Assessment Across the Lifespan
This module not only develops your in-depth knowledge of anatomy and physiology, but there is a strong emphasis on pathophysiology and clinical reasoning skills in the assessment and management of patients with core clinical conditions across the lifespan. You will spend the mornings in taught sessions and the afternoons in the clinical labs undertaking clinical assessments and simulation-based activities related to each body system.
  • The Evidence Base for Adult Nursing Practice
This module will introduce you to the foundations of adult nursing practice. You’ll learn about nursing assessments and assessment tools, prioritisation of care, risk assessment and risk management, and developing core clinical skills for practice. You will be introduced to research in nursing and the concept of evidence-based practice, as well as its importance in nursing practice.
  • Public Health and Nursing in Communities
Public health forms a large part of the healthcare agenda today. This module will explore the impact of social inequality on health using current statistics and data from various health and social care organisations. You will learn about epidemiology and the nurse's role in disease prevention and pandemics, as well as undertake a community health needs assessment in your local area.
  • Part 1 Practice Assessment (Year 1)
You'll gain real-world nursing experience on 15 weeks of placement across a variety of adult hospital and community placements.
  • Part 2 Practice Assessment (Year 1)
Continue your practice-based learning with a 9-week placement in a hospital, hospice, or community setting.
Year two
  • Pharmacology for Contemporary Nursing Practice
Nursing today requires that nurses are ‘prescriber ready’ at the point of nurse registration with the NMC. You will develop a comprehensive knowledge, understanding and application of the principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of drugs in the management of patient care. Using a case study approach, you’ll learn about different drug groups and classifications and the application of these to body systems and diseases.
  • Managing Complexity in Adult Nursing Practice
This module addresses the complexity of patient care in today’s NHS. Topics covered include holistic assessment and decision-making in complex care, medical emergencies and managing patient deterioration, caring for the patient with co-morbidities, and working as part of the multi-disciplinary team. You will undertake an assessed Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) as part of this module.
  • Transforming Care in Nursing
Nurses are at the heart of service innovation and improvement. This 60-credit dissertation module will give you the opportunity to choose an area of adult nursing practice that you believe could be improved. This is followed by a review of the evidence pertaining to your idea and a change management proposal where you will discuss how you would bring your proposed change about.
  • Part 3 Practice Assessment (Year 2)
    You'll complete a 14-week placement followed by a 12-week placement across a range of adult-focused hospital and/or community placements.
