Programme Aims

1. Develop a critical awareness of eco-tourism practices within the adventure and outdoor sectors

2. Critically evaluate and apply key concepts underpinning the eco-tourism and outdoor adventure sectors, utilising both theoretical and practical activity in an experiential context

3. Prepare students for a future career in adventure tourism organisations or related occupations

Graduate destinations

This course is for you if you want to pursue a career within outdoor skills instruction, environmental education, conservation, therapeutic and personal development contexts of outdoor work, teaching in schools, expedition leadership, tourism and several of the services (police, fire, paramedics and armed forces).

Global focus for Lakes’ survival trailblazer

A Lake District-based bushcraft expert has spoken to leading international figures and specialists in military survival at a global gathering in Canada. A lecturer in outdoor studies at University of Cumbria (UoC), Dr Lisa Fenton told around 300 delegates from across America, Canada, the UK, Sweden, Norway and Holland about a ‘transformative’ process linking people back to the natural world.

A North Yorkshire couple who found love whilst training to be teachers in the Lake District almost 30 years ago have returned to Cumbria to watch their daughter graduate. Katie Pritchard-Jenkins, 21, has completed her BSc Outdoor Adventure and Environment degree at the University of Cumbria’s Ambleside campus and is planning to follow her parents’ example and become a teacher. Her proud parents Adam and Gill trained at the same site 30 years ago when it was known as Charlotte Mason College.

In relation to choosing a university I can only draw from personal and peer experiences, therefore I will probably be a little biased towards my own (brilliant) course.
