BSc Mental Health Nursing graduate Kelly Cornwell, of Fleetwood in Lancashire, is the recipient of the University of Cumbria Institute of Health’s Jim Cox Prize that is given to the most inspirational student. In January 2023, her husband Kevin (an aid worker) was taken captive by the Taliban in Afghanistan. Kelly raised the profile of his imprisonment and challenged for his release whilst also maintaining family cohesion, undergoing emergency surgery herself, and completing her own final-year degree studies - including a dissertation and 670 hours of a professional placement in a mental health hospital. Kevin was released on 10 October, just a few weeks before Kelly’s graduation at Carlisle Cathedral on 22 November 2023. They were able to share the day together with members of their family.
