Welcome to your Chaplaincy
Questions about God are a fundamental part of the human story and belief in God is a fundamental part of the identity of many people in our world, nation and university community.
For this reason, and as a result of the university’s Church of England foundation, the University of Cumbria includes spiritual development as one of the key values in its corporate strategy. The day-to-day expression of this commitment is the life and work of the university chaplaincy team.
What do you do?
That is simple to answer but wonderfully rich and complex in practice! In a nutshell, we are here to promote the flourishing of every member of the university community. Our way of expressing that is to say that we are very much ‘your chaplaincy’, here to help you discover ‘life in all its fullness’.
At your chaplaincy, you can:
find...encouragement and support
We want to serve you by offering a listening ear and creating a safe space in which you can find support and guidance as you meet the many challenges of university life. Whether you have faith in God or not, we are here for you with an open door.
discover...prayer and worship
Human persons are not merely physical, emotional and intellectual beings; spirituality is also an important part of who we are. We want to serve you by providing opportunities for prayer and worship which will help you to engage with your spiritual identity.
We are made for community. We want to serve you by providing opportunities to enjoy community life within the university. This is especially important as we meet some of the challenges of being a distributed learning network. So watch this space for invitations and events.
explore...the Christian faith
As a university with a Church of England foundation, the chaplaincy team in the University of Cumbria has a commitment to providing opportunities for you to explore the Christian faith. We want to serve you by giving you the opportunity to have life-enhancing encounters with the Christian faith and the person of Jesus Christ.
link...to other faith communities
As a chaplaincy team we are also committed to creating space within the university community which allows the voices of many different faith traditions to be expressed. As a result of that commitment, we seek to provide honorary chaplains and facilities which will allow you to explore your own faith. Alongside our Christian chaplains, our team is currently enriched by two honorary Muslim chaplains who actively support our Muslim students, staff and the Islamic Society. As the university pursues its aims of internationalisation and widening participation, the chaplaincy team will endeavour to provide faith support for other represented faith traditions.
A Prayer for the University of Cumbria
Almighty and Everlasting God, who fills all things with your presence, may your blessing rest upon the University of Cumbria, upon the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, staff and students. Prosper their endeavours, promote their studies, and purify their minds unto the perfect knowledge of yourself; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
