Creating Partnerships for Sustainable Development
Saturday 21 May 2016
9.30am to 4.30pm
University of Cumbria Ambleside campus
This workshop will be delivered by the Deputy Director of the Institute for Leadership & Sustainability (IFLAS), Dr David F Murphy on Saturday 21 May at the University of Cumbria, Ambleside.
The workshop will offer participants a range of tools, frameworks, scenarios and cases to enhance knowledge and skills to develop and implement effective multi-stakeholder partnerships linked to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Dr David Murphy was formerly with the UN System Staff College and has vast international experience in training senior executives. In 1997 Dr Murphy and Jem Bendell co-wrote the first book on sustainability partnerships. David is the course leader for the Postgraduate Certificate in Sustainable Leadership.
This workshop will also provide an opportunity for networking between our overseas MBA/MA students, and a range of local participants working in different sectors. The day will include refreshments and a buffet lunch.

Postgraduate Certificate in Sustainable Leadership
In 2014 IFLAS launched a new qualification for professionals who want to enhance their approach to personal, organisational and societal sustainability. "Sustainable Leadership" describes ways of relating that promote change that is mutually beneficial for the person, organisation, stakeholders and world at large.
This Postgraduate Certificate is suitable if you have at least five years of experience in related fields, and will continue working while studying. You are required to make two separate week-long visits to the Lake District. A third of the course is independent study on a particular question of sustainable leadership that you wish to explore with the help of course tutors. The tutors include Professor Jem Bendell, Dr Kate Rawles, Dr Chris Loynes, Dr David F. Murphy and Richard Little. If you progress to a Masters within 5 years, the Postgraduate Certificate provides the credits for a third of our MA in Sustainable Leadership.
Certificate of Achievement in Sustainable Leadership
IFLAS also offers a Certificate of Achievement in Sustainable Leadership. The programme involves a one-week residential, and students can decide after completion whether to progress to the full postgraduate qualification.
This is also the first compulsory module for the PgC, or it can be undertaken as a standalone certificate of achievement at 20 credits.
Certificate of Achievement in Sustainable Exchange
Economic and environmental crises are often in the news, yet social innovation is growing at pace.
Collaborative consumption systems like Airbnb, digital currencies like Bitcoin, local currencies like the Bristol Pound, gifting systems like Impossible.com, and sharing systems like TimeBanks UK, suggest that there could be a new paradigm emerging for how we organise our economic lives in ways that could restore community and the environment.
The aim of this Certificate of Achievement is for you to understand why and how to create, scale and evaluate digitally-enabled systems of 'sustainable exchange'.
Sustainable exchange includes systems for giving, sharing, renting, exchanging, and funding, with or without official money.
This is also one of the optional modules on the PgC and can be studied as a standalone module worth 20 credits.
MA Sustainable Leadership Development
Through our tradition of experiential learning in and from nature, you will explore and develop both your own leadership for sustainability, and how to design and deliver leadership development experiences for others. In a highly flexible programme that can fit around your working life, it involves a series of week-long visits to our campus in the heart of the famously beautiful Lake District.
Discussions with peers striving to be better leaders, facilitators, educators and coaches, triggered by remarkable guest lecturers and facilitated by world-class tutors will help you explore the future of your vocation.
The course begins with a six day residential in the Lake District, led by Professor Jem Bendell, where you will be challenged and supported in a highly inter-disciplinary exploration of both sustainability and leadership where orthodoxies will be deconstructed so you can more clearly identify a pathway for your future as a leader of social and organisational change. You then choose from a range of residential and online modules.
We welcome applications for PhDs in related fields. People can study full-time or part-time. See our research, for areas we work on, an article from our Director about our approach to doctoral research, and the University Graduate School pages for further information.
