Why study with us?
Are you passionate about history? If it's your dream to impart your knowledge and love of history on to a new generation as a secondary school history teacher, then this is a great place to start.
On this course you are taught by a team of tutors who combine experience in schools with an impressive record of published work, including articles on teaching history and contributions to history and citizenship textbooks. We have strong links with schools, so you also learn from teachers in our partnership schools and from field visits. We explore history teaching and learning using a variety of approaches, focusing on active learning and critical thinking in history, in and out of the classroom.
We want you to become an enthusiastic and inspiring teacher, and a curriculum innovator of the future. To ensure your own development is fostered, we also build in regular review points and an enrichment experience, where you could be developing resources in a museum or archaeological site.
What can this course lead to?
This course can lead to a fulfilling career as a history teacher at secondary school. Since all the steps required to gain qualified teacher status are built into the course, you'll be able to apply for positions immediately after graduating.
Course Summary
This course helps you become a teacher who can make the past come to life for pupils, stimulate their curiosity and develop their critical thinking, writing and speaking. You are exposed to various approaches to teaching and learning in history, so that pupils find it vibrant and relevant.
University-based training explores how drama, literature, ICT, artefacts and site visits can enrich their learning. You learn generic and subject-teaching skills, such as securing a purposeful classroom, lesson planning and new approaches. We aim to give you diverse teaching placements, so you can practise your teaching in different contexts. There are also specific sessions devoted to developing the skills needed for your masters-level action research.

Selection criteria
-
Competition for places on this course is very high. Applicants with strong academic profiles (e.g. a 2:1 degree with minimum 50% history and with observational experience of a UK secondary classroom environment in history) are prioritised over other applicants in obtaining an interview.
-
Applicants with 2:2 honours degree and at least 50% study in history may apply but selection for interview cannot be guaranteed because of competition with stronger applicants. Applicants with less than 2:2 classification or without the minimum 50% study of history detailed in their application will not be invited for interview.
-
GCSE grade C or above in English Language and Mathematics or equivalent qualifications.
-
We strongly recommend that you obtain a minimum of 2-3 days experience in a mainstream UK secondary school observing a class in your chosen teaching specialism before applying. With competitive subjects such as History we may not select you without this experience.
-
A satisfactory academic (university) reference OR a satisfactory professional reference if more than three years since academic study.
-
All candidates must demonstrate professional suitability through interview and must obtain medical and enhanced CRB clearance according to established university procedures.
