Five part-time work opportunities at university

Having a part-time job at university offers so many benefits. Not only will the extra income go a long way, but depending on the job you take, it’s a great opportunity to meet new people and develop your independence. Plus, if you find something relevant to your degree, it’ll look awesome on your CV!

If you’re looking for a part-time role and are wondering what the best jobs are for students, here are five ideas to get you started.

Become a student ambassador

If you love your university and think you could convince others to study there too, look into student ambassador roles. Student ambassadors are paid to support events and activities on behalf of the university, including helping at open days, filming social media content, and doing campus tours. These positions are really flexible, making it easy for you to work around your timetable and deadlines.

Get a job in retail

If you enjoy being around people, working in retail could be a great fit. Most retailers will be happy to rota you in around your lectures, and with regular hours, you’ll be earning a steady income. Retail work is also great for employee discounts!

Having regular contact with customers will also help to build your empathy and patience, skills that can make you an attractive candidate during job interviews in the future. And of course, a job in retail is a fantastic way to make friends outside of university.

Work in a café, restaurant, or bar

If you’d prefer the freedom of being a seasonal employee, getting a job at a bar, café, or restaurant could provide the flexibility you’re looking for. These are fast-paced environments, so from the moment you walk in to the moment you leave, there will be something for you to do. Plus, you might also be fed during your shift, which is an added bonus.

Consider becoming a tutor

If you like helping others, tutoring could be the perfect match. Private tutoring is probably the most flexible part-time work opportunity on this list — not only can you choose the age and level you tutor at, but it’s easy to fit the hours around your university timetable. It also looks great on your CV as it shows you're so knowledgeable in your subject that you can teach it to others.

Look for campus jobs

Working on campus can help you feel part of the wider university community, exposing you to services, groups, and societies that you didn’t know existed. What’s more, working on campus is super convenient – it's easy to get to and if you live close by, you won’t be reliant on public transport.

If you have to do placements as part of your degree, you'll find the university is really accommodating during these periods too, allowing you to adjust your hours accordingly.
