If you're looking to top-up your management degree with a focus on international business, then our course is just what you need. We will provide you with extensive knowledge of the international business environment so that you are well prepared for a career in the global business world.

Studying aspects of business and management such as human resources, marketing, finance and operations, there's no limit to the career opportunities this course can open for you. With options to study abroad, you'll be able to get a true experience of how management works on an international level.

Over the year, you will learn to critically evaluate the relationships between international business strategy and operational needs, providing creative and innovative solutions through the key essential attributes of management and leadership.

You will also learn to contextualise business management and practice across a range of public, private and third sector organisations in local, regional, national, international and global contexts.

Year one

UCBS6001 - The Independent Project - The module aim is for you to be able to initiate, plan, research, sustain and evaluate an extended piece of independent intellectual work based on individual initiative and pathway of study.

UCBS6002 - Strategic Leadership, Innovation and Change Management - The aim of this module is to develop a critical and synthetic understanding of a broad range of contemporary strategic leadership, management and organisational knowledge, and apply them to develop consistently competitive organisational strategies for an organisation operating in a globalised business environment.

UCBS6003 - The Consultancy Project - This module aims to provide you with the opportunity to develop and apply the skills of problem solving and project management, including financial, time, resource and relationship management through a 'real' consultancy project with an external organisation.

It also aims to allow you to experience a substantial and sustained piece of work set by, and for, employers. Therefore it contributes to employability by focusing on the importance that employers place upon knowledge, creativity, skills and attributes.

UCBS6004 - Global Business Perspectives - This module seeks to critically analyse how global business perspectives and globalisation impacts on the way companies have developed and how they are organised and operate.

In addition it seeks to critically evaluate how contemporary issues impact on globalised businesses to ensure that you, as leaders and managers of the future, are equipped with the ability to consider the new, the exciting, the challenging and the contemporary as opportunities for growth and to build competitor advantage.

UCBS6005 - International Strategic Human Resource Management - The aim of this module is to critically evaluate human resources in domestic and international contexts. This will enable you to become more effective managers and leaders in an increasingly globalised society. The module develops your critical evaluation of the HRM framework, its links to strategy and organisational performance. This will lead to a critical analysis of the contribution of specific HR policies and practices to the achievement of organisational goals.

UCBS6006 - International Strategic Marketing - This module aims to explore key marketing strategies for companies in a global environment and how differences in culture affect their development.

The module explores business strategic marketing development at a strategic level;you will therefore consider how they grow, expand and adapt to changing stakeholder demands, environmental/social expectations and United Nations/government regulations. Differences in standardised and customised marking strategies are considered across a range of geographical locations and a critical evaluation of how this affects globalised organisations' marketing strategies.

Applicants from courses based at institutions other than University of Cumbria will be assessed on their suitability depending upon the modules they have studied.

Full-time courses

Apply online through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS), between September and January; they will send your application on to us. Applications submitted after this date will be considered late and the course you have applied for might be full by this time; however, we will consider you for alternative suitable courses.

Applications should be made online directly to the university; visit our website or contact for details and guidance. There is no official closing date but we would encourage you to apply as early as possible, as many courses are competitive.

What makes a good application?

We consider all aspects of your application, not simply your qualifications and grades. We look at your academic background and performance, relevant experience (particularly for professional courses where some voluntary or paid experience is required) and your reference. Above all, we look for motivation, commitment and potential-evidence that you can benefit from study at higher education level.

Make sure you include:

  • Relevant qualifications/evidence of ability: check our website for the specific entry requirements required for each course. Tell us your previous academic results and your projected grades.
  • A supportive reference, from an employer or your school or college.
  • A good personal statement.
  • Explain clearly what attracts you to the course and tell us about your wider interests and experience. If you are applying for a course that incorporates professional training and placements, you should include any relevant experience or visits you have made in the workplace. Highlight your individual strengths and qualities, personal skills, capacity for teamwork, contribution to the community and your enterprise, originality and determination. Select some activities which bring out these qualities.

What next?

When we receive your application, we will send you an acknowledgement and if you are successful at this stage you will get either an offer (with an invitation to visit the campus to which you have applied), or an invitation to interview on a particular date. If we are not able to offer you a place on your chosen course we will usually try to offer you a place on a similar course and will contact you to discuss this. Alternatively, if we think you are suitable, but cannot offer you a place on your preferred campus because of the level of competition, we will offer you a place at another campus if one is available.

And if I accept?

Deferred entry

We welcome applications for deferred entry on some courses. If you have specific plans during your year out, indicate these on your personal statement as they may be relevant to your course and could enhance your application.

From 2009 the UK Border Agency introduced a Points-Based Immigration System (PBS) for students coming to the UK from outside the European Economic Area (EEA). Students entering higher education will need to obtain a Confirmation of Acceptance (CAS) plus finance confirmation to obtain a Tier 4 student visa. UK education providers are licensed by the UK Border Agency. When students apply for their visa (or entry clearance) they will need a valid Certificate of Acceptance of Studies from the university. Please note that a CAS is not a guarantee that a visa will be issued.
