Building your world

Our commitment is to provide our students with a high quality education and facilities so that they can grow and develop their skills to move into rewarding careers.

At the University of Cumbria we are busy building your new world! We want to create a real sense of place and are constantly investing in your future by developing our campuses to enhance the environment in which you will live, work, study and ultimately achieve.

Significant investment has introduced some exciting new facilities across a number of our campuses, including:

Lancaster

We have an exciting estates master plan in place for Lancaster which has already seen an investment of over £9million with the creation of a purpose-built learning environment which acts as a central hub for all academic and research activities, and student support services.

As part of this investment a new multimillion pound, environmentally sustainable teaching block was completed for the start of the 2017 academic year.  This new modern teaching facility has a "Silver" SKA Rating and incorporates a 220-seat lecture theatre, social learning spaces and 2500m2 of high-quality teaching accommodation.

Carlisle

Our ambition is to become the lead provider of STEM courses in the region. We are investing over £3.5 million in state-of-the-art science teaching and research laboratories at our Fusehill Street campus in Carlisle.  The second phase of development is already underway.  This will enhance the existing facilities providing even more high-quality space for learning, research and consultancy.  We intend to create a true centre of excellence for collaboration and science education in Carlisle and the region.

With the current demand for STEM graduates (43 per cent of vacancies in STEM roles are reported as being hard to fill due to a shortage of applicants with the required skills) and the planned inward investment into the region of over £25 billion towards the development of nuclear power, there’s never been a better time to consider a career in this sector!

Ambleside accommodation block

The university has invested over £13million at the Ambleside campus. This includes £4.5million on the development of bespoke new student accommodation, providing high-quality ensuite rooms and facilities including several DDA accessible bedrooms.

The redevelopment of the campus has been carefully designed and carried out in a way sensitive to the natural environment and using local materials such as Burlington slate.
