A tale of the suffragette movement to have its Cumbrian debut at the Stanwix Theatre
Woman On Fire is a new, original play by the highly-acclaimed Certain Curtain Theatre Company that takes you into the fiery heart of one of the most dangerous, strange and 'modern-women' in history.
The story of Edith Rigby remains largely unknown. Overshadowed by the more vociferous Pankhurst women, Edith nursed a quiet fire.
Yet, inside this calm, affable doctor's daughter raged a flame that burned white-hot against social injustice and a political system that denied women their most basic human right. The right to be treated as citizens in their own land, by denying them the right to vote.
Receiving a four-star review in The Scotsman, this explosive one-woman show celebrates the centenary of women first winning the right to vote. Told through the eyes of unsung suffragette, Edith Rigby, a mild-mannered doctor’s wife with a secret identity. Woman on Fire takes you into the blistering core of the UK suffrage movement – from Preston to Manchester, London to Glasgow and back. Terrorist or impassioned freedom fighter? Funny, sad, tense and outrageous but always utterly compelling, this dynamic performance lets you decide.
“We are delighted to be welcoming the Certain Curtain Theatre Company to Carlisle”, said Professor Graeme Danby, Artistic Director of the Stanwix Theatre. “This is the first, of several professional touring productions at our Brampton Road campus that we hope will help us to grow our audiences and develop the theatre venue”.
