Carlisle campus hosts northern gymnastic final name

Over a hundred young gymnasts from all over the north have been competing in Carlisle for their chance to take part in a national final later this year.

Sport centre staff at the University of Cumbria’s Fusehill Street campus hosted the event which also gave students studying PE the chance to gain practical experience of working with young people.

“It’s the third year the university has hosted the event,” Howard Todd of the British Schools Gymnastic Association said. “We’ve more teams than ever taking part – under 11s, under 13s, under 16s and over 16s.”

Rachel Davis, a second year PE student, and first year student Daniela Dawkins were among those taking part in the administration of the event - work which will stand them in good stead for the future.

“Students get the chance to volunteer with the judging but there’s also sports rehabilitation and coaching,” said Andrew Keir, Sports Centre Manager at Fusehill Street. “This acts towards their placement hours and gives them the kind of real life experience that can lead to a job.”

Successful teams from the northern heat will qualify to compete in the national final due to be held in March.
