A University of Cumbria nursing student has been shortlisted for a second prestigious award in recognition of her work to develop an emotional support project and involvement with Samaritans in Lancaster.

In February third year mental health student Catherine Hind was shortlisted in the ‘most inspirational student nurse of the year' category of the Student Nursing Times Awards 2018 and is now also a finalist in the Royal College of Nursing’s RCNi Nurse Awards. She’s shortlisted for the Andrew Parker Award which recognises ‘student nurses who can demonstrate that their nursing practice, perceptions or interactions with patients changed as a result of an incident or experience during training.’

Last year the same award was won by University of Cumbria alumni Zoe Butler

“It’s very exciting - this award relates to the emotional support project underway at the university and University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust which aims to help healthcare staff improve their confidence supporting people who may be in distress, self-harming or suicidal,” Catherine said. “It’s very exciting that this kind of project is getting such recognition.”

As hospital outreach team leader with Lancaster and District Samaritans Catherine also helped launch a localised leaflet which is available to patients visiting the Emergency Department at Royal Lancaster Infirmary and highlights the organisations free phone number 116 123.

The RCNi Nurse Awards 2018 take place on Wednesday 4th July 2018 at the Westminster Park Plaza, London.
