Special courses, fitness tests and health advice is being offered at the University of Cumbria in a week-long event aimed at encouraging more staff to get active and support a campaign launched following the death of a former student.
From circuit training to Zumba, a range of classes have been organised to give staff a taste of a variety of activities during the university's Healthy Week initiative. Simple exercises which can be completed while sat at a desk have also been devised by university specialist sports teams aimed at boosting activity.
“We’re all too aware that not taking a break, let alone doing something in that time, is becoming part of the culture of work life in the UK,” Tim Barry, head of medical and sport sciences department, said. “We’re aiming to do something about that mentality and demonstrate to all staff that there are simple measures they can take every day that will have a lasting impact on both their physical and mental health.”
Another incentive for action is the aim of raising money to help the family of a former student, killed in a so-called ‘one punch’ attack in Blackburn in 2009. Adam Rogers studied sports science at the university and following his death his family started a campaign to help tackle alcohol-fuelled violence. Money raised through the campaign will go towards the cause.
“It’s something dear to many here who were understandably affected by Adam's death,” Tim Barry says. “We’re challenging staff to collaboratively walk, run and cycle 500 miles and raise money towards his family’s campaign ‘Every Action Has Consequences’ to ensure he’s remembered for helping achieve something positive.”
The university Healthy Week is being held from April 24 until 28 2017 with events being held at all campuses.
“Dave and I would just like to say a massive thanks for organising this event and remembering Adam in this way which fits in so well with his love of sport,” Pat Rogers said. ”We are particularly grateful for any fundraising as trying to raise enough money to keep the charity going is one of the hardest things for us.”
Pat is also taking part and has pledged to cover at least 5 miles each day from the 24th to the 28th which will go towards the 500 mile total.
