An event aimed at showcasing the vital work carried out by the emergency services in Cumbria and ways of becoming a part of them is to be held at the University of Cumbria. The Health Care and Blue Light offers careers advice which is intended to encourage paramedics, nurses and police officers of the future to learn more about the professions.

Honours for peace advisor and high-flying headteacher as 1,000 graduands prepare to celebrate
Up to 4,000 people will flock to Carlisle Cathedral next week for the University of Cumbria’s 2019 summer graduations. Seven ceremonies will take place over three days - Tuesday 16 to Thursday 18 July. The University will also award an Honorary Fellowship to Canon Sarah Snyder, the Archbishop of Canterbury’s special advisor for reconciliation and founding director of the Rose Castle Foundation, and the title of Alumnus of the Year to Norfolk headteacher Imran Khan.

University goes on the road for a summer of festival fun
Staff and students are hitting the road to give people a glimpse of what life is like at the University of Cumbria. The ‘Up and Coming’ interactive roadshow is criss-crossing the north of England and beyond this summer. People have the opportunity to don VR headsets and take virtual tours of campuses and facilities. They can also meet academics who are leading taster sessions and giving a flavour of the learning experiences that await prospective students once courses start after Clearing.

New term for tomorrow’s teachers
Aspiring teachers have started their studies with University of Cumbria. In line with latest coronavirus guidance, many of the mature students are enjoying face-to-face sessions with tutors on campus while the university’s annual induction programme for them has moved largely online Reflecting a national upturn, it comes as University of Cumbria has witnessed an increase of almost 14 per cent in the number of teacher training applications it has received so far this year.

Winter graduations bring university celebrations to Cumbria
Figures from the worlds of media, agriculture and land management, and the Church of England are joining 1,000 graduands being honoured by Cumbria’s university. With up to 4,000 people expected, University of Cumbria is awarding three honorary fellowships and its first honorary doctorate across three days of graduation ceremonies at Carlisle Cathedral over 26-28 November.

University of Cumbria help as UCAS application deadline approaches
With additional time granted this month to students and their teachers and advisers to submit university applications, University of Cumbria is offering support to those thinking about starting a degree in 2021. The university’s outreach and recruitment experts are holding informal support sessions online for potential applicants and those seeking help. The next one is on Wednesday 27 January, 2-3pm. A dedicated applicant advice service is also running 9am-5pm daily.

Elf antics on university campus support Alzheimer’s Society
University of Cumbria ceremonies manager Suzanne Forrester is bringing Christmas cheer to campus - dressing up as an elf every day in December as part of a family fight back against a dementia diagnosis. Suzanne, 48, says she has been overwhelmed by the response of supporters who have helped raise £1,400 to date for the Alzheimer’s Society through her charity challenge.

Students continue to receive impartial higher education outreach during the Covid-19 pandemic
Cumbrian students will continue to benefit from the Hello Future partnership, thanks to confirmation of the final year of funding until July 2021, announced by the Office for Students. Part of the national Uni Connect programme, Hello Future is a partnership of universities, FE and skills providers that is led by University of Cumbria. Hello Future is working closely with colleges and Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership on a project to support year 11 and 13 students taking their next steps.

#makeitblue campaign lights up former Cumbria hospital as university says thank you to coronavirus heroes
University of Cumbria joined forces with two county firms to say a special #makeitblue thank you to the NHS heroes, key workers and volunteers helping communities during the coronavirus lockdown. Its Grade II-listed Skiddaw building on the Fusehill Street campus in Carlisle was lit up in an eye-catching display to coincide with Thursday evening’s #clapforcarers. Formerly the city's general hospital, the site is now where student nurses and many more entering public services are educated.

University of Cumbria plans a safe return to its campus operations
The University of Cumbria has begun working on its plans to reopen its campus services, where it is safe to do so, and the reintroduction of some face-to-face teaching from September 2020. Stressing that the health, safety and wellbeing of its staff and students continues to be the main priority, the university said it will continue to follow and be guided by Government and Public Health England advice on how and when a safe return to working on campus is feasible.
