University to link with world leading cancer treatment centre

Diagnostic radiography students at the University of Cumbria are to benefit from outstanding clinical placements at a world leading cancer treatment centre. The university has signed an agreement with The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester to host placements from September 2018 giving students access to one of the world’s pioneering centres.

A national shortage of sonographers and an investigation of how experienced radiographers report domestic abuse of the elderly are among six papers, emerging from the University of Cumbria’s Medical and Sport Sciences department, accepted for presentation at this summer’s UK Radiological and Radiation Oncology Congress (UKRCO) in Liverpool.

Double celebration for Devon

There was cause for a double celebration for University of Cumbria medical imaging student Devon Benton who not only joined almost fifty colleagues in graduating but also received a prestigious prize in recognition of his outstanding work. Devon from Lytham St Annes was awarded The Challen Prize for Ethics to mark his ethical approach to his academic and clinical studies during the course.

Prize winner Grace 'a quietly exceptional student who attained astonishingly high marks'

There was cause for a double celebration for University of Cumbria medical imaging student Grace Marsden who not only joined nearly fifty colleagues in graduating but also received a prestigious prize in recognition of her outstanding work. Grace, from Bleasdale near Preston, was awarded the Dr Harold Tulloh Prize for Technique after attaining exceptionally high marks in technique related modules.

Cumbria radiation sciences research work scores with international community

An internationally recognised discussion group which considers medical radiation sciences research has chosen to highlight work carried out at the University of Cumbria for the second time this year. This month research work, which examined how children are cared for while undergoing MRI procedures, will be the lead discussion topic. The study was conducted by senior lecturer in research methods and social psychology Dr Paul Miller and senior lecturer colleague Dr Lisa Booth.

International recognition for Lancaster radiography researchers

Radiography researchers from the Lancaster campus of the University of Cumbria are celebrating after winning one of the inaugural prizes awarded by an internationally recognised discussion group. In March Lancaster-based academics Dr Charles Sloan and Dr Paul Miller invited discussions around a paper entitled Are Recent Radiography Grads ‘fit for purpose?’ The online community voted by a significant margin this week that this was the ‘favourite chat’ in recognition of the debate it prompted.

New institute’s ambition to tackle NHS staffing crisis

A new Institute of Health set up at the University of Cumbria aims to tackle the ongoing staffing crisis in the NHS with a dual purpose of recruiting more new staff in Cumbria as well as upskilling and retaining the current workforce. In addition to growing new recruits, the newly formed institute aims to support policy and research in relation to the NHS Long Term Plan with a renewed emphasis on increased funding for continuing professional development (CPD) and upskilling of current NHS staff.

From September 2020, all those studying nursing, midwifery and many allied health professions will qualify for an annual grant of at least £5,000 with more available to students with children and those studying specialist disciplines where recruitment has been challenging.

Cumbria leads international effort to support radiographers during coronavirus pandemic

University of Cumbria academic Ken Holmes and Professor Peter Hogg are co-ordinating an international response to help radiographers caring for patients with Covid-19. They have created a new e-learning package for radiographers and radiological technologists with contributions from over 40 experts across the world. It is developed in a partnership between the European Federation of Radiography Societies (EFRS) and International Society of Radiographers and Radiological Technologists (ISRRT).

#makeitblue campaign lights up former Cumbria hospital as university says thank you to coronavirus heroes

University of Cumbria joined forces with two county firms to say a special #makeitblue thank you to the NHS heroes, key workers and volunteers helping communities during the coronavirus lockdown. Its Grade II-listed Skiddaw building on the Fusehill Street campus in Carlisle was lit up in an eye-catching display to coincide with Thursday evening’s #clapforcarers. Formerly the city's general hospital, the site is now where student nurses and many more entering public services are educated.

Student radiographer featured on national news

A student radiographer who returned to placement to support the NHS during the coronavirus pandemic has had her video diary account featured on national news. Ismat Khan, a 19 year old radiography student from Preston, returned to placement at the Royal Preston Hospital in June to care for patients exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19.
