This Degree level module is part of the Institute of Health's Practice Development Framework. As a registered nurse or allied health professional and as part of your continuing professional development, the module will develop your ability to assess, recognise and manage the healthcare needs of patients presenting with respiratory conditions such as asthma and COPD.

Course summary
Physical examination techniques of the respiratory, cardiac and ENT systems; history taking; spirometry; blood gas analysis; acute and chronic disease presentations to include mesothelioma, pulmonary emboli, pleural effusions, pneumothroax, bronchiectasis, bronchilitis, asbestosis, asthma, COPD, Cystic Fibrosis, pneumonia, fibrosing alveolitis, respiratory failure; management of respiratory conditions.
On successful completion, you will be able to:
- Develop knowledge and understanding of acute and chronic presentations of respiratory conditions in adults and children including red flag diagnoses and red flag symptoms;
- Critically discuss the physical examination techniques needed to enhance the assessment of the patient suffering with a respiratory condition;
- Critically evaluate the assessment tools used to assess and manage the patient with the respiratory condition;
- Critically review the management of patients with respiratory conditions reflecting use of evidence based therapeutic interventions and consideration of the implications of the disease;
- Critically reflect upon the application of the knowledge and understanding gained to practice.

Timetables
The teaching timetable should be available from the end of August. Access to the timetable is through the Student Hub – you will be able to access the Student Hub after you have completed online registration. The teaching day is 9am to 6pm, Monday to Friday; please keep your other commitments open until confirmation of your teaching timetable, and bear in mind that many courses will offer placements or fieldwork which sometimes extends into the evenings and weekends.

Selection criteria
To be eligible to study this module, you must demonstrate the ability to study at this level and commit to attempting the assessment. When taken as part of a specific named award, the module content and assessment must be focussed towards the subject of that award. Participation in the formative components of the module is required in order to pass the module.
