What Our Business Partners say
-
From the initial enquiry stages the University of Cumbria has been a delight to work with, no request has been too small and all dealt with in a timely and professional manner.

I have worked closely with the University of Cumbria for almost a decade, firstly when they delivered the BSc in Project Management to our apprentices and then during the development, and subsequent implementation of the Level 6 Trailblazer standard in project management. I can comfortably say that they are exceptional at what they do.

We are learning new ideas from our apprentice as well as having him here to oversee projects out of season. Both the student and the business are benefitting from some good business advice and skills.

The employers we partner with have been able to bring new skills into their business as well as train existing team members through a partner apprenticeship programme with us.

University of Cumbria have been responsive and have worked as a true partner to enable employers to maintain continuity of high-quality education throughout what has been a very difficult and stressful time for a group of front line emergency response employers, and we would have no hesitation in recommending them to other employers.

The value an apprentice brings through their varied life experiences and holistic approach to care has improved our services, enhanced our teams and improved the standards of care we deliver to our patients.

We have grown and developed our clinical provision with the support and guidance from Cumbria. It is more than just having a member of staff doing an apprenticeship; this involves mentors and the development of mentorship within our trust. Those staff members who are mentors have all gone on for extra training to develop their skills so that they can better support and guide others. There is an excellent partnership between us as the employer and the university, with both supporting the learner.

What Our Apprentices say
-
The benefits for me were having a structured day-to-day routine and getting into the world of work early. You’re getting a degree and earning while you’re learning. Since joining, I’ve loved doing an apprenticeship because you really do get stuck in. Before I began, I didn’t really understand what a day would look like, but I’m someone who likes to learn something and then do it — and that’s how I learn, by making mistakes and getting hands-on.

Go for it! Doing the job is really how you learn, working with experienced people who can teach you but the extra knowledge you get from the university modules, alongside the on the job learning through the apprenticeship, really gives you a much broader understanding of the role and the sector as a whole. It’s hard work but really worth it for the knowledge and experience you gain.

I would highly recommend the route of an apprenticeship to others, the combination of knowledge and experience gained through the programme provides a better overall education than traditional university degrees. It also offers a great opportunity to save for the future without incurring any student debt, which is a huge advantage.

My primary motivation for undertaking my apprenticeship was to enhance my knowledge and skills in prehospital emergency medicine, which would ultimately benefit my patients. Prior to the apprenticeship, my colleagues and I, who were of the same skill grade (Emergency Medical Technician), would have to request Paramedic assistance to provide higher levels of care.
