Welcome to your course

We are delighted to welcome you as you start your life as a University of Cumbria student. This will be a busy time for you, so the business school staff and their colleagues have planned induction activities and events to help you settle in and find your way around. In this vocationally based award, critical consideration is given to the development and use of computer systems and their contribution to the successful management of organisations and the data they rely on. You will study technical and academic subjects as well as focus on self-chosen specific areas through project work.

During Welcome Week, you will engage in some formal and informal activities which are designed to introduce you to your fellow students and the academic team, preparing you for your chosen course of study. You will be provided with information about the course structure. The welcome week will also focus on selection of group project topics, which normally involve dealing with an actual client and a real-world problem.

First Year Modules

Compulsory Modules

Optional Modules (Subject to availability and demand)

Pre-course preparation

As you start thinking about your level 6 programme, you’ll find it helpful to look back on the technical skills you have developed so far. One area to focus on is database management systems and the purpose of the SQL language. You’ll also find that level 6 involves far more reading than you may have had to do before. For example, look at Oracle’s CRM White Paper and think about how you could prove or disprove the claims made by the author.

Pre-course Reading

Each module has its own key texts which will normally be available to borrow from our libraries – usually in e-book format. We don’t recommend that you purchase specific books at this stage - you would be better spending time and effort on brushing up your research and technical skills before the course commences. As part of your studies in the final year you undertake a significant individual project. This could be a research based dissertation or a project based academic exercise – you should give some thought to areas of interest before you start the course so that you can begin to explore the options as soon as the module begins.

If you have any questions about your course, please don't hesitate to get in touch with our Admissions team.
