Wildlife Media at Young Cumbrian Filmmaker Showcase

The Young Cumbrian Filmmaker Showcase at The Alhambra Cinema - Penrith, celebrated new talent and creativity, including films made by 4 brilliant students on University of Cumbria's BA Wildlife Media, as selected by the Green Screen Youth Takeover.

The audience enjoyed watching ‘On the Edge: Saving the Iberian Lynx’ by Megan Richards; ‘Detect and Protect’ by Issy Drake & Poppy Hotham; ‘Echoes of the Sky’ by Callum Blackmore & Tilly Kingsford; and ‘Seasonal Secrets’ by Samuel Richardson.

The Green Screen Youth Takeover initiative screens films addressing environmental issues followed by panel discussions. The panel at the event was led by Rosa Prosser, environmental filmmaker & researcher (soon to be studying for a PhD in environmental filmmaking at Harvard University) in conversation with Dr Alex Playford, biodiversity expert lecturer on the BA Wildlife Media degree at the University of Cumbria, and Laura Baxter, programme leader of the BA Wildlife Media degree, together with Tom Speight, Chair of Cumbria Arts & Culture Network and graduating students Issy Drake & Poppy Hotham.

Audience feedback included lots of interest and praise for the quality of filmmaking on show and the diversity of topics covered.  Discussion included how to foster creativity and support further study and careers in the arts.  Tom discussed the new Cumbria Arts and Culture Network initiative ‘See it to Be it’ which will provide advice and opportunities about creative careers for young people in Cumbria: https://cacn.co.uk/young-cumbrians-to-get-help-to-build-creative-careers
