Dr Elizabeth Bates, PhD

Biography

I started working at the University of Cumbria in 2011 as a lecturer in psychology. I progressed to senior lecturer and am now Principal Lecturer in Psychology and Psychological Therapies.  I currently manage the subject group which included Psychology, Counselling and Psycotherapy and CBT.  In August 2023, I also became an Associate Professor of Family Violence and Abuse.

I completed my PhD in 2012 and have since specialised in working with male victims of domestic violence and abuse and I am also a trutee of the ManKind Initiative, a UK male victims charity. My work has explored the men's experiences of abuse, the barriers that exist to help-seeking, and the ways inn which this can impact tem as fathers and their children. I have done a lot of work with Dr Julie Taylor, who is also at the University, and we have published a number of articles and co-edited books together.

Academic and research interests

My main research areas are around domestic violence and aggression. Specifically I focus on male victims, psychological abuse and controlling behaviour, and how this is affected by personality and psychopathology e.g. attachment patterns, personality disorders.

I additionally have an interest in pedagogic research. Specifically, I have explored student transition to Higher Education, as well as student satisfaction and postgraduate student experiences utilising photo-elicitation.

My current projects include:

• Exploring the post-separation experiences of men who have experienced domestic violence and abuse
• Exploring the impact of domestic violence and abuse on fathers and their children
• GBT men's experienes of domestic violence and abuse (with colleagues in the US)
• Exploring the abuse experiences of Muslim and South Asian men (with colleagues at MMU and UWL)
