Lancaster campus update 2024

Lancaster campus update 2024 name

Re-development works are progressing well at Lancaster. Whilst we appreciate that this news is difficult for many who have a strong affinity to the campus, we want to ensure that all our alumni are kept informed of developments.

For background information on the campus re-development please visit our previous article here. https://www.cumbria.ac.uk/about/alumni/demolition-of-1960s-buildings-at-lancaster.php

The Southeast area of the campus has been sold to the Progress Housing Group a not-for-profit housing provider who owns and manages over 12,000 homes. They are also one of the UK's leading supported living providers for people with autism and learning disabilities. They aim to build an extra care facility on the site which is due for completion in May 2025.

Work to divert the services and utilities and to demolish the former university buildings has now been completed. The following buildings have now been demolished:

  • Melling Halls of Residence
  • Gressingham Halls of Residence
  • Sarah Witham Thompson Halls of Residence
  • Black Box Theatre
  • Old Dining Hall and kitchen
  • Part of Long Corridor
  • Estates Workshop

The next phase includes refurbishment of Hornby and Barbon as part of the extra care facility, due for completion in July 2024 and conversion of the Art Studio scheduled for completion in January 2025. The Extra Care facility substructure, windows and doors are scheduled for July 2024 with final completion of external works by April 2025.

Buildings may be demolished but our memories, experiences and friendships will be with us forever. If you wish to share your stories of your time at the Lancaster campus we would love to hear from you, email alumni@cumbria.ac.uk
