Mapping crime: an interactive introduction to crime prevention

Students will critically engage with the reality of crime prevention and challenge their own assumptions about different types of crime. Introducing deep-rooted social issues that facilitate crime and the challenges that these issues present for criminal justice practitioners.

Event Overview

Students will be provided with a map of a local area and fictional data concerning 999 and 101 calls made from specific locations. These include local parks, the hospital, domestic dwellings and streets outside local bars and clubs. Students are given the (fictional) data about the nature of the calls and are charged with designing a crime prevention strategy for the area. Crime types include anti-social behaviour, domestic violence and mental health incidents.

 

The aims are:

  • For students to critically engage with the reality of crime prevention
  • To challenge their own assumptions about different types of crime
  • Introduce them to the complex nature of crimes such as domestic violence
  • Introduce them to the deep-rooted social issues that facilitate crime
  • Highlight the challenges that these issues present for criminal justice practitioners.
