Climate and Nature Education

Heather Prince, Professor Emerita of Outdoor and Environmental Education, has been elected to the Department of Education's Climate and Nature Education Evidence Academic Insight Group to inform the review of the Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy

This follows Heather's role as Principal Investigator on a number of research and resource development projects for Natural England, grouped as  ‘Time in Nature'.  These projects variously focused on facilitating children, young people and communities access to  green and blue natural environments for learning and health, and developing 'green infrastructure' for climate resilience and increased biodiversity.

Heather is also the University of Cumbria's representative on the Morecambe Bay Curriculum Steering Group. The Morecambe Bay Curriculum is a community-curated, place-based approach to learning about sustainability and aims to encourage children and young people to become change-makers and innovators for  planetary health.

Heather Prince's most recent publication (December 2025) based on a Natural England project on Walney Island, Cumbria is: Teach on the beach within reach: The challenges of, and opportunities for creating place-responsive activities for primary-aged children in an area of urban deprivation in the UK
