Monitoring Heritage Sites

Monitoring Heritage Sites

In 2025, Eleanor Evans, University of Cumbria PhD candidate, worked with Dr Demos Parapanos and Tim Heap from University of Cumbria to submit a response to a call for experts on cultural, heritage, and/or tourism research from The Palace of Westminster (UNESCO World Heritage Site) Restoration and Renewal Programme.

On 10th October, Eleanor presented ‘A Cost-Effective Approach to Monitoring Outdoor Heritage Sites’ at the IEREK Conservation of Architectural Heritage conference, 9th Edition, in Egypt and has submitted a paper to be published. The conference was attended by experts, including architects, academics and heritage professionals, from 17 countries. Topics covered at the conference included the surveying of heritage buildings in hard-to-reach locations and conflict zones; restoration and re-purposing of heritage buildings for community use today; preservation of intangible heritage through built heritage; and constructing practical toolkits and frameworks for use with architectural heritage assets.

In a local knowledge-exchange event, Eleanor also presented ‘A cost-effective toolkit for measuring loss at heritage sites’ at The Armitt, Ambleside (28th October 2025), covering the development of her methodology, details of the fieldwork and results, and the use of the toolkit by an independent heritage organisation, their results and feedback. At the end of the presentation, there were discussions and sharing of ideas around the research and its applications in the heritage sector in Cumbria.
