Multiple Capitals Approach for Upland Agricultural Systems

Multiple Capitals Approach for Upland Agricultural Systems

Lois Mansfield, Emeritus Professor, University of Cumbria, has authored a new textbook, published 5th June 2025 by Routledge, which focuses on the application of a Multiple Capitals Approach for building resilience in upland agriculture.

Case studies of UK hill farming, Japanese satoyama and Andean paramo are used to discuss how the multiple capitals of natural, human, social, cultural and financial can be integrated through ideas such as socio-ecological systems and the nature-culture entanglement. The book explores interrelationships and inter-dependencies with an aim to develop a novel management planning tool through capital appraisal (classification, inventory, measurement and valuation) and capital development (adaptive co-management and/or community development).

The book, Multiple Capitals Approach for Upland Agricultural Systems, is available to purchase here.
