Biography

I have worked for the University of Cumbria since February 2021, and have supported the evolution of the Paramedic Degree Apprenticeship Programme throughout this time to see the programme grow from one cohort per Trust to now full capacity with the EEAST programme having six cohorts currently running and over 190 active learners.

I commenced a secondment in March 2023 as a Principal Lecturer with a focus on the workstream of Student Support and Engagement and this is an area of the learner journey that I am particularly passionate about.  I set up a programme wide working group to focus on this area of educational practice and we have designed and implemented a number of processes that have benefited and advocated for the student voice, including videos to widen access to central support services, informing induction content to provide information, guidance and support to learners, adapting TPR process and documentation and the creation of a student focus group for the programme.

In addition to this I devised and implemented a strategy to address attrition challenges experienced on the programme, and since its implementation, which I have led across the programme, we have seen a significant reduction in learner withdrawals and those taking a break in learning.  Those that do take a break in learning are more robustly supported, and this links to an additional piece of work that I completed that explored the referral process to central support services within the university, widening accessibility to these services and improving understanding of both staff and students in respect of what help is available.  This was a piece of work that I presented to the wider Institute of Health.

Prior to working for the University, I was employed by the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust as a senior Education Manager where my role was to design and implement a range of different programmes of education in core clinical training for clinicians from Band 3 through to graduate paramedics and qualified staff who joined the Trust.  I also designed the first nursing curriculum delivered in EEAST and achieved accreditation for their paramedic degree apprenticeship programmes at level 3 and level 4.
