We’re here to bust the most common myths about Clearing to give you a better understanding of what it’s really all about. With our advice and tips, you can approach Clearing with confidence this summer!
Myth 1: Clearing is only a back-up option
No, this isn’t true! While Clearing is commonly used by students who don’t meet the conditions of their firm or insurance choices, there are lots of other reasons why you might decide to enter Clearing: you’ve changed your mind about your offers, you’ve exceeded expectations with your results, or you haven’t applied to university at all yet but wish to start this September.
Ultimately, Clearing can uncover opportunities you may not have considered before, including courses and universities that could be an even better fit for you.
Myth 2: It’s too late to apply to university for this year
If summer arrives and you suddenly think, “Actually, I do want to go to university this year”, that’s completely okay! You’re not too late. UCAS Clearing runs from July through October, giving you plenty of time to explore your options, find the right course, and secure your place. Many students apply in August and still start university in September, right alongside everyone else.
Myth 3: There won’t be any accommodation options left
At the University of Cumbria, once you accept your Clearing offer, our Accommodation team will help you apply for our Halls of Residence. We understand you’ll have a lot to organise before moving in, so we’ve shared some useful information about applying for and securing your place in our accommodation to make the process as simple and stress-free as possible. Myth 4: I won’t be able to get student finance in time
If you’re going through Clearing but haven’t applied for student finance yet, you can still do so. You’ll want to apply as soon as possible to ensure your funding is in place before the start of term.
If you’ve already applied for student finance but change your course or university in Clearing, you’ll need to log into your account and update this information.
Myth 5: Once I’ve accepted a firm offer, I’m stuck!
This isn’t true at all. If you accepted a firm choice earlier in the year but have since changed your mind, you have the option to release yourself into Clearing and explore other possibilities.
Myth 6: Courses in Clearing aren't the best available
This is a common misconception. Courses appear in Clearing for many reasons; sometimes extra places are made available, or demand shifts unexpectedly. Courses offered through Clearing are high-quality and in demand.

Myth 7: Clearing is stressful
It’s natural to feel overwhelmed, especially if you’ve been waiting for your results and enter Clearing unexpectedly. But with the right support and preparation, it's an exciting chance to take control of your future.
