How to apply to university through Clearing

How to apply to university through Clearing

If you’re thinking about applying to Cumbria through Clearing but aren’t sure how the process works, we’ve prepared this detailed guide to ensure you have all the information you need!

Applying through Clearing: What to do before results day

Do your research & make a shortlist

No matter your reasons for entering Clearing, you can start thinking about what and where you’d like to study before results day. Create a list of the universities you’d like to speak to, making a note of their courses and contact information. At Cumbria, our Clearing hotline is 0808 178 7373.

Gather all the personal details you’ll need to apply

Before you make any calls on results day, you'll need to have your exam results, personal details and UCAS ID ready. We recommend reading your UCAS personal statement again too as you may be asked some questions about this.

We understand you might have questions for us as well, so to ensure you don’t forget them, write all your questions down so you have something to refer to.

Check clearing vacancies

Courses do fill up quickly during Clearing, so it’s worth keeping a close eye on the UCAS website in the lead up to results day to track what places are available. You can view the list of Clearing courses at Cumbria here.

Book a Clearing open day

There's a chance you could end up applying to a university in Clearing that you haven’t visited before, so take a look at the open days they have available so you can get a feel for their campuses. If you’re interested in studying at Cumbria, book your place at one of our Clearing open days.

Applying through Clearing: What to do once you have your results

Contact universities

Once you have your grades, you can start contacting universities by calling their hotlines.

When you call us at Cumbria, one of our advisors will ask you about the course you’d like to apply for and take some personal details from you.

Depending on the course you’re interested in, we may need you to complete an interview or submit a portfolio before we can offer you a place. Keep a pen and paper to hand so you can take down any important information.

Make your decision

Once you’re happy with the offers you have, it’s time to make your decision. If you haven’t visited the universities you’ve applied to through Clearing, have a look at each one and see what they have to offer. You might want to find out more about their facilities, the accommodation they have available, the location of the campus and any other factors that are important to you.

Accept an offer

How you accept your offer will depend on whether you have already applied to university via UCAS:

You’ve applied via UCAS

If you have applied to university via UCAS, you can add the Clearing offer you want to accept to your UCAS Hub. You can only accept one offer, so before you update your profile, make sure you’re happy with the course and university you’ve chosen.

You haven’t applied via UCAS

If you haven’t previously made a university application via UCAS, you'll get an email notification instead – this will include instructions on the next steps you’ll need to take.

The next steps... after you accept your place

Apply for accommodation

Once your place is confirmed, you’ll need to apply for Halls of Residence. At Cumbria, you can do this by contacting our Accommodation team. We'd advise you to explore our wide range of accommodation options here too.

Update your student finance application

If you have already applied for student finance, you’ll need to update your application to reflect your new university and course. If you haven’t applied to student finance at all yet, we’d advise doing so now as applications can take 6 weeks to process – you don’t need to be holding an offer to apply!
