Our Ultimate Guide to Moving to University

Our Ultimate Guide to Moving to University

Moving to university is a big step – whether you’re coming straight from school, returning to education later in life, moving from abroad, or bringing family with you. Whatever your background, this guide is here to help you prepare for your new chapter at the University of Cumbria.

1. Pack Smart

Your first week will be easier (and way more fun) if you pack smart. As well as the essentials like bedding, towels, and kitchen utensils, don’t forget the extras that make university life a little easier:

  • A doorstop to help you meet flatmates
  • A speaker or card game to break the ice
  • A small lamp or some fairy lights to make your room cosy
  • A costume or two for themed nights (you’ll thank us later)

Be sure to watch this video by our Accommodation team, too – it’s an ultimate guide of what to bring (and what not to bring) when moving into University of Cumbria accommodation.

Top tip: Pack a small bag with a few days' worth of clothes and toiletries separately so you can easily access them when you arrive.

2. Explore the Local Area

No matter which campus you’re heading to – Brampton Road, Fusehill Street, Lancaster, Ambleside, Barrow, or London – each has its own charm. If possible, plan a visit before term starts to explore and familiarise yourself with your new surroundings.

After moving in, take a walk into the town centre, find your new go-to coffee spot, and enjoy the stunning local parks and landscapes. It’s a great way to settle in and feel more at home.

3. Look into Travel Discounts

If you don’t drive, don’t worry – public transport is a reliable and budget-friendly option around our campuses.

16–25 and 26–30 Railcards: You could save you a third on train travel with a railcard, even if you're a mature or postgraduate student (just check the eligibility).

Local buses: Many providers offer student discounts on passes and single fares.

Travel apps: Download apps for local trains and buses to plan your journeys easily.

4. Make Your Room Feel Like Home

Your room will be somewhere to relax, recharge, and make your own.

Consider bringing:

  • Photos of loved ones
  • Cosy touches like cushions and blankets
  • A soft lamp for evening reading
  • Organisers for your desk or drawers

Stores like IKEA, B&M, or Home Bargains have affordable options for personalising your space. Just double-check accommodation guidelines before bringing items like candles or plug-in diffusers.

5. Sign up for Student Discounts

Save money from day one with student discount platforms:

UniDAYS: Free to join, with discounts at ASOS, Nike, Samsung, M&S and more.

TOTUM Card: The official student discount card, with deals on food, fashion, travel, insurance – and it can double as ID.

6. Get Excited for Welcome Week

Welcome Week is your official start to university life. You'll:

  • Meet your tutors and classmates
  • Collect your student ID
  • Discover campus facilities
  • Learn what’s on offer from the Students’ Union

Don’t miss the Freshers' Fair – packed with freebies, society sign-ups, games, and opportunities to meet people. Whether you're into sports, crafts, volunteering, or just want to explore your options, there’s something for everyone.

7. Get Involved with the Students’ Union

From day one, you’re part of University of Cumbria Students’ Union (UCSU) – your go-to for student support, events, societies, and advocacy.

Whether you want to join a club, become a course rep, volunteer, or simply attend social events, UCSU is here to help you find your people and thrive.

Learn more about our groups and societies, as well as other ways you can get involved in university life, over on UCSU’s website.
