PGCE Primary Blog: November 2023

PGCE Primary Blog: November 2023

Wow. November has been quite an incredible month for us on PGCE primary. Our September cohort students are on their first assessed school placement and our January cohort are coming to the end of their time with us.

Our tutor team has had the privilege of visiting many of them in school as part of quality assurance process, and we have been delighted at the way our student teachers have got stuck in to school life: Christmas productions, winter fairs, residentials, and the daily business of developing their skills as teachers. We have had some lovely feedback from our school-based mentors regarding how well they are doing.

It has also been wonderful to celebrate the graduation of last year’s cohort. We had a fabulous day at the stunning Carlisle cathedral, joining these new teachers and their families in what was such a special day. It was great to hear how the first term of their Early Career Teacher year was progressing. Here’s me congratulating graduate Helen in my own inimitable way (photo left). And with one of our wonderful PGCE tutors, the fabulous and not very tall Gail Blackburn (photo right).

It has also been a bumper month for me as my second book, ‘Thinking for primary writing’ was published. Based on my PhD research, this book is intended to support teachers, student teachers and teacher educators in developing children’s writing by getting them thinking creatively.

So, as December dawns, we look forward to welcoming our students back to their campuses. I, for one, am really excited to hear their tales of placement, look at their ‘sorry you are leaving’ cards from their classes, and enjoy their successes. I am also looking forward to hearing how their conversation and engagement with the remainder of the programme is informed by the wealth of experience they have had.
