Studying or living in the Tower Hamlets area means you're right in the heart of one of London’s most exciting and evolving neighbourhoods. From waterfront walks and hidden green spaces to cultural events, local markets, quality food and social hangouts, East London offers a mix of city buzz and unexpected gems that suit every kind of student.

Here’s our updated guide to the local area, whether you’re passing time between lectures, planning a weekend adventure, or looking to try something new with friends.

Waterfront Walks and Outdoor Spaces

Canary Wharf—which is a short walk from our London campus—isn’t just skyscrapers; it’s packed with open spaces and scenic spots where you can relax, exercise, or recharge.

Eden Dock – This waterfront haven offers opportunities for open-water swimming, paddle boarding, and wellbeing events. Construction is also underway for an exciting new floating outdoor pool and wellness space, giving you a fresh way to cool off and socialise right by the water.

Jubilee Park and Harbord Square Park – These tree-lined green spaces in the heart of Canary Wharf are great for picnics, reading between classes, or meeting friends outdoors.

Crossrail Place Roof Garden – This lovely (and free!) indoor-outdoor oasis is full of tropical plants, quiet corners, and even an amphitheatre for live performances and community events.

History, Culture and Museums

Even in modern parts of London, there’s plenty of history to explore.

London Museum Docklands – Set in historic Georgian warehouses just a short walk from Canary Wharf station, this fascinating museum tells the story of the River Thames, the docks, and their role in shaping the city. And entry is free!

Greenwich Foot Tunnel – For a unique riverside adventure, walk through this historic pedestrian tunnel under the Thames and emerge into Greenwich with its markets, parks, and world-class museums.

Tower Hamlets cultural spaces – The wider borough is rich with culture, from galleries and street art to venues hosting music, theatre, and festivals throughout the year.

From local history to public art and performance, there’s plenty to explore beyond the buildings.

Canary Wharf Shopping and Social Spots

This area has its own distinct flavour when it comes to food, drink, and retail.

Canada Place and Cabot Square – This modern public square is packed with high-street stores, designer brands, and coffee shops and eateries. It’s perfect for a shopping day or a coffee break between lectures.

Fountains and public art – Canary Wharf’s plazas are dotted with fountains, sculptures and light displays, and make great spots for photos, meet-ups, and soaking in urban life.

Restaurants and bars – From relaxed pubs like The Henry Addington and The Cat & The Canary to international cuisine (including classic Italian and Thai-inspired menus), there’s something for every mood and palate.

Whether you’re after brunch, dinner or coffee, the area has a variety of places to suit your plans.
