Tell us about yourself

My name is Carolyn Kent and I have been at the University of Cumbria since March 2019. Before this, I was working as a physiotherapist in private practice and elite sport and wanted to move into the research side.

Let us know more about your practice experience and how you transitioned to academia

I worked in elite men’s and women’s football after doing my rotations in the NHS. I loved working as a physiotherapist in sport and also liked treating the general public in private practice. Before becoming a physiotherapist, I obtained an Exercise Science degree while completing a football scholarship in South Carolina, USA.

What research area do you specialise in?

I specialise in injuries in football and performance of the female athlete. I am heading to the FIFA conference in Madrid this year and really looking forward to it!

What modules do you teach and what is your favourite part of these?

I teach Introduction to Assessment and Treatment in Physiotherapy. I take the exercise module and also the musculoskeletal module. I’m very passionate about exercise and the health benefits that come from this.

What makes your course different?

We have our Physiotherapy Society which organises trips and talks that interest our students. We also work with students to help them set up any events they want, for example an end of year ball.

What’s your favourite thing about teaching at Cumbria?

People here are very friendly.

What’s an interesting fact about yourself?

I’ve represented my country at 2 sports (football and footgolf) and played at a World Cup in footgolf where Scotland Women finished 4th overall.
