Tell us a little about yourself

I have worked for 35 years’ in the environment field with the last 25 years spent as an academic teaching undergraduate and postgraduate environmental programmes.

I joined the University of Cumbria 4 years ago as Director of the Institute of Science and Environment. I became an academic because I am passionate about environmental issues and wanted to inspire the next generation of environmental managers.

I am a Chartered Environmentalist and Fellow of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment.

What’s your industry background

I started my environmental career working in a local authority as a Pollution Control Officer then worked on developing and implementing the authority’s own environmental policy.

I first moved into the higher education as an environmental manager, taking responsibility for managing all the impacts and environmental compliance of a University. I have also delivered environmental consultancy and training for businesses and industry.

What makes your course different?

Our Environmental Science programme has been developed to provide the knowledge and skills required to access a wide range of environmental careers, starting with a focus on underpinning scientific principles in year one before moving on the explore environmental issues and how we assess the environment in year two.

In the final year we will focus on solutions and future challenges. An international fieldtrip in year 2 allows us to explore global environmental challenges for different perspectives.

What advice would you give to students considering studying on this course?

Being based in Carlise we can easily explore urban and rural environmental challenges on our doorstep. An environmental practitioner strand runs across all three years of our programme developing environmental specific skills and providing an inter-year environmental project.
