Research and Knowledge Exchange

The Institute of Engineering, Computing and Advanced Manufacturing (IECAM) is committed to developing a strategic, inclusive and industry‑focused approach to research and knowledge exchange across Cumbria, with a particular emphasis on Barrow. Our position within the region—combined with our advanced technical expertise, interdisciplinary strengths and strong relationships with local employers—enables us to address both regional and national priorities with insight and impact.

We are building a thriving research and innovation culture grounded in real‑world application, collaboration and meaningful outcomes. At IECAM, research and teaching are deeply interconnected. Applied learning, co‑designed with employers, and industry‑aligned research are at the heart of our academic model. This ensures that our programmes remain current, relevant and shaped by the needs of industry.

Our students play a central role in this work. They are the future researchers, innovators and academics who will drive the region’s technical capability forward. By embedding research within their learning journey and connecting them directly with employers, we strengthen both our academic offer and the long‑term sustainability of the institute.
